Students Stack Up Success At 3rd/4th Grade Robotics Meet

April 14, 2026 Tom Royer

Eighty elementary students from across Martin County, Minn., teamed up for a challenging robotics competition at MCW Elementary School in Trimont the morning of Saturday, April 11th.

This event required students to navigate their robots around the game field, working collaboratively to score points by stacking colorful pins and placing them in specific zones. These robots are created from a kit of pre-approved parts. Students followed a set of instructions to build a base robot and then were free to create their own designs to better play the game.

This Martin County KnowHow! VEX IQ Robotics Competition saw 3rd & 4th graders from the Truman, Fairmont, Martin County West, and Granada-Huntley-East Chain school districts — 29 teams, most with 2 or 3 students each — working together to face a friendly collaborative challenge. These students spent several weeks building and learning how to operate their VEX IQ robots, and were excited to put their hard work to the test.

Congratulations to the podium finishers: 1st - Da Unks (Fairmont) + The Rattlesnakes (MCW); 2nd - BRS (Fairmont) + BroBotz (Fairmont); 3rd - Robot Wars is a Sigma (GHEC) + Purple Pride (Truman)

Thanks to all of the students who participated, their fans who came to cheer them on, all of our adult & student volunteers — including members of the Fairmont and MCW high school robotics teams — who helped put on this event, and Martin County West for hosting! You’re all an important part of this fun application of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in our community.

Special thanks to our founding supporters Project 1590, Martin County Area Foundation and Kahler Automation, and additional supporter Martin County Youth Foundation.
