Martin County students tackle “Full Volume” robotics challenge

More than 60 elementary students from across Martin County, Minn., teamed up for an energetic robotics competition at MCW Elementary School in Trimont the morning of Saturday, April 13th.

This Martin County KnowHow! VEX IQ Robotics Competition saw 3rd & 4th graders from the Truman, Fairmont, Martin County West, and Granada-Huntley-East Chain school districts — 61 students across 25 teams — working together to face a friendly collaborative challenge. These students spent several weeks building and learning how to operate their VEX IQ robots, and were excited to put their hard work to the test.

The competition required students to navigate their robots around the game field, working collaboratively to score points by placing blocks in goals, clearing the supply zone, and parking their robots. These robots are created from a kit of pre-approved parts. Students followed a set of instructions to build a base robot and then were free to create their own designs to better play the game.

Elementary students from across Martin County, Minn., will be teaming up for an energetic robotics competition at Truman High School the morning of Saturday, Dec. 9th -- and spectators of all ages are welcome to witness this fun application of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in our community.

This Martin County KnowHow! VEX IQ Robotics Competition will see dozens of 5th & 6th graders from the Truman, Fairmont, Martin County West, and Granada-Huntley-East Chain school districts working together to face a friendly collaborative challenge. These students will have spent several weeks building and learning how to operate their VEX IQ robots, and are ready to put their hard work to the test at this exciting STEM event.

Light concessions (a fundraiser for Truman Pride) will be available for sale at the free event, scheduled to take place in the high school gymnasium.

STEM camp brings bubbles, ‘bots & more

SHERBURN, MN — Elementary students from across the area performed classic science experiments and high-tech robotics challenges at Martin County KnowHow!’s summer STEM camp, held June 26-28, 2023 at the Martin County West Elementary School in Sherburn.

Students entering grades 1 through 6 this fall enjoyed a variety of projects over the three-day camp, with the youngest children tackling science experiments, and older students building & programming different levels of VEX robots.

1st & 2nd Grade - Science Exploration Camp

“Eleven enthusiastic young scientists who will enter the 1st and 2nd grades in the fall attended Martin County KnowHow’s annual STEM Camp held June 27th and 28th at Sherburn Elementary School.

The campers performed many hands-on activities including making circular gliders, straw rockets, rubber band helicopters, antacid rockets, balloon bottles, wave bottles, slime, bubble blowers, and bubble solution.”

“During the first half of camp, 3rd and 4th grade students built a robot and learned how to program it to drive, recognize colors, and react to those colors.

The second half of camp, they built a robot to complete an Ocean Science Exploration course driving their robots themselves.”

5th & 6th Grade - VEX IQ Camp

“Seven students going into 5th and 6th grade from across the county spent three days building and programming VEX IQ robots to compete in a mini tournament using the VEX 2023-2024 Full Volume game.

Two teams worked together at a time to knock cubes off pegs, score cubes in goals, and park their robots in the endzone, before the one-minute timer buzzed.

Teams were led by members of the Fairmont High School Robotics team to build and program their bots for the tournament.”

Super 'bots send "slapshots" at VEX IQ event

FAIRMONT, MINNESOTA — Dozens of elementary students from across Martin County, Minn., teamed up for an energetic robotics competition at Fairmont Elementary School the afternoon of Saturday, April 1st.

The event challenged the students to score points by having their robots remove discs from dispensers and propel them into goal zones. Teams were encouraged to work together during each 90-second match, finding ways to make the most of their robots varied specialties. Points were scored for each disc removed from a dispenser, and for the position of any discs within the goal zones at the end of the match.

This Martin County KnowHow! VEX IQ Robotics Competition saw 3rd & 4th graders from the Fairmont, Truman, Martin County West, Granada-Huntley-East Chain, and St. James Lutheran schools — more than 80 students across 27 teams — working together to face a friendly collaborative challenge. These students spent several weeks building and learning how to operate their VEX IQ robots, and were excited to put their hard work to the test.

After each team had the opportunity to hone their skills in 8 qualification matches, they were ranked based on their average scores. The qualification rankings were:

STEM Camp offers fun science & tech challenges

FAIRMONT, MN — Elementary students from across the area performed classic science experiments and high-tech robotics challenges at Martin County KnowHow!’s summer STEM camp, held June 21-23, 2022 at the Southern Minnesota Educational Campus in Fairmont.

1st & 2nd Grade - Science Exploration Camp

“The camp began with earth science and the study of rocks. The students took a walking field trip to Ward Park where they searched for rocks on the lake bank to begin their rock collections. Next up was physics and experimenting with magnets. Students made predictions of whether plastic, wood, paper, metal and other miscellaneous objects could be picked up by a magnet. They then tested out their predictions. The campers continued their magnet play using paper clips guided by magnets to paint a picture. Each one was a masterpiece!

More physics was in store with the classic sink or float experiment. Students again made predictions, this time about whether they thought different items would sink or float when placed in water and had the chance to test each item. With the help of a radio’s speaker and some rice, the campers also observed how sound waves move and can even move other objects. We finished the first session with some paleontology and learning how fossils are made. The students made their own fossils using play-doh and seashells.

Our second session began with more paleontology and the study of dinosaurs. Campers drew their favorite dinosaurs, and each child was given their own dinosaur name. The students next made ribbon rockets, and partners practiced making their rockets move back and forth between them by exerting force on the ribbons. Chemistry was featured next as two cooking ingredients (flour and vegetable oil) were mixed to make moon sand. It was fun molding the sand into shapes.

Campers again experienced chemistry in forming play-doh volcanos and then mixing vinegar and baking soda inside them to produce a chemical reaction eruption. More chemistry was at play as the campers placed Skittles candies in a ring on a plate and water was added. The candy coating then melted and moved to the middle of the plate in a beautiful design. The students’ final and most messy chemistry activity was mixing corn starch with hair conditioner to produce a play-doh-like substance called moon dough.”

3rd & 4th Grade - VEX GO Camp

“Our group built a robot and learned to use VEX code to program it and its attachments to accomplish several tasks.

Examples of these tasks include: Navigating a track using colors to tell the robot what direction to turn... using bumpers to tell the robot to turn when it hits an object... using an electromagnet to pick up an object and move it to a different location... and use a LED eye to avoid objects in its path.

At the end of each day the students were able to demonstrate what they learned by either designing their own course to take their robot through, or take part in a game designed to use several different operations the robot can perform.”

5th & 6th Grade - VEX IQ Camp

“Students worked in groups of 2-3 to build robots they would use on the last day to compete in a VEX IQ challenge course. On the first day many groups that already had experience with VEX IQ decided to embark on a new building experience with a new style of robot. It was very impressive to watch the students work and identify what their robot was capable of doing.

On day 2, some of the students started to see how coding could be done on their robots. They worked to make them move back and forth and turn. Many problem-solving skills were being used during this as sometimes the code students put into place caused their robots to spin non-stop. Students then had to identify why this was happening and work to fix any issues. Some students found that a completely different robot design would work better for the competition so they decided to start over. It was very impressive to watch them work so quickly.

On day 3, students had two hours for any last-minute adjustments to their robots’ construction and/or coding. During this time we also ran practice competitions so the students were able to become efficient in their remote handoffs and quick with adding up point totals for scoring. By the end we had all groups working and strategizing together to participate in the robotics competition that we help the last hour of camp.”

Robots Roll in Martin County VEX IQ Tournament

TRIMONT, MINNESOTA — Dozens of elementary students from across Martin County, Minn., teamed up for an energetic robotics competition at Trimont Elementary School the morning of Saturday, April 2nd.

This collaborative event required students to navigate their robots around the game field to gather small beanbags from across the game field and secure them within a central goal. Teams were encouraged to work together during each 90-second match, finding ways to make the most of their robots varied specialties. Points were scored for each beanbag swept away from the field’s edges and into the goal, with a bonus if their robot was able to lift itself off the field before time ran out.

Registration is now open for Martin County KnowHow!’s 2022 STEM Summer Camps, June 21-23 at the Southern Minnesota Educational Campus in Fairmont, for students entering grades 1 through 6 this fall.

For the younger kids going into 1st & 2nd grades, we’ll have a two-day Science Exploration Camp on the mornings of Wednesday, June 22 and Thursday, June 23. Students will get to participate in classic science experiments such as making a volcano, magnet activities, sink-or-float, and a walking science field trip. At the end of Day 2, these younger students will get to watch the older kids compete in their robotics competitions. Parents/guardians are welcome to join at the end to see what their students have accomplished at camp and watch the robotics as well.

Students entering 3rd & 4th grades will be participating in a three-day “Vex Go” Robotics Camp on the mornings of June 21, 22, and 23. These kids will work together in teams to build and learn how to operate Vex Go robots, and on Day 3 take part in cooperative competitions with their robotic creations. Parents/guardians are welcome to join at the end to check out what the students have accomplished and watch the competition.

Finally, those entering 5th & 6th grades will take part in a three-day “Vex IQ” Robotics Camp on the mornings of June 21, 22, and 23. This camp will work just like the Vex Go camp described above, but with more advanced robots to challenge these older kids’ abilities.

All camps will be held at the SMEC building at 115 S Park Street in Fairmont. Camp costs include all materials plus snacks courtesy of the Fairmont Early Risers Kiwanis. Registration for all camps is available through the Fairmont Community Education & Recreation at https://fairmont.revtrak.net/Community-Education-1002/ and is open to all students entering grades 1 through 6 across all of Martin County.

NOTE: Students can receive a 50% registration discount if their parent/guardian assists the teacher during the entirety of their child's camp. Click the CER link for details.

DIAMETER is the distance straight across the middle of a circle. CIRCUMFERENCE is the distance around the outside of the circle.

The circumference of a circle is about three times longer than its diameter.

D + D + D = C or D x 3 = C

Pi is about 3. More precisely, the number for pi is closer to 3.14159265359. (But even that’s not exactly right — keep reading below!)

In math, the symbol for pi looks like this:

Not sure pi is real? Find out for yourself with some science!

Gather the following materials:

Tape measure
Ruler
Cylinders of various sizes (like soup cans, paper towel rolls, drinking cups…)
Paper and pencil or pen
Calculator

Then just follow these directions:

First, remember that circumference is the distance around the cylinder or circle, and that diameter is the distance across a circle.
With the tape measure, measure the circumference of one cylinder and write down that value.
With the ruler, measure the diameter of the cylinder and write that down next to the circumference.
Repeat steps 2 & 3 for all of the cylinders you’ve collected. Write down the values for each cylinder on a new row.
Look for a relationship between each cylinder’s circumference and diameter. How many diameters would you need to equal one circumference? That’s pi!
To get a more precise answer, use the calculator to take the circumference and divide it by the diameter. How close is your answer to 3.14? Think about why your answers are probably NOT going to be exactly right because your measurements won’t be perfect… and 3.14 is just an approximation of pi anyway!

The three dots means that the number goes on and never ends! In 2021 researchers in Switzerland used a supercomputer to determine the value of pi to 62.8 TRILLION decimal places. That’s a lot!

PI CRAFT

Combine your math skills with your artistic skills!

If you’ve got lots of colorful beads (for bead bracelets) or different colors of craft paper (for paper chain garlands), you can make “pi art” that only kids as cool as you will understand! Whether you do this with beads or paper, the important thing is that they’ll need to be in 10 different colors.

For these instructions we’ll use the example of making bead bracelets, but the same concept works for paper chains.

What you’ll need:

Beads in 10 different colors
Cord for bracelets
Scissors to cut cord
Paper and pencil or pen

Write down on a piece of paper the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Next to each number write the name of one of the color beads you have. Each color should only be assigned to ONE number (for example, if you write “0 = red” then no other number can be red). Using that as your guide, start placing beads on your bracelet cord in “pi order” for as many decimal places as you want. When you’re done placing beads, cut the cord leaving enough space at each end so you can tie the ends together.

What Engineers Do: Aerospace Engineer Richard Check

For Engineers Week 2022 we wanted to show #WhatEngineersDo by chatting with some real engineers with Martin County ties. Today we hear from Richard Check, an aerospace engineer with Boeing.

Q: What do you do at your job?

I’m an engineering manager for The Boeing Company in Everett, Washington. My group is in the Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) business unit and is titled “Composite Structural Methods and Allowables”. We’re part of a central Structures support organization, and provide structural analysis methods (both closed form equations and finite element based methods) and composite strength design values to all BCA airplane programs (737, 747, 767, 777, 787 and future Product Development).
Engineers on the airplane programs use the structural analysis methods and strength values that we provide to calculate the predicted strength of detailed composite parts going on our airplanes. My team drives a lot of small-scale material strength testing that’s used to develop the composite material strength values and to validate the analytical methods for predicting part strength (i.e. we ask our test labs to break things for us). Our primary composite material systems consist of various epoxy resins reinforced with various forms of carbon fiber and fiberglass. We have both solid laminate and honeycomb type structure on our airplanes.
As the manager of this team, my primary responsibilities are to set overall priorities, ensure that we have appropriate budget and staff, help with technical decisions, review and approve all technical guidance developed by our team, and provide the engineers on our team with career development and growth opportunities. Earlier in my career I was an engineer on the original 777 program as a structural stress analyst calculating strength of detailed parts during the design phase of the program. I was also part of the “Internal Loads” team that calculates internal forces going through the structure of the airplane.

Q: What’s the best part of your job?

Knowing that we contribute to the creation of commercial airplanes that change the world is pretty special. By far the best part of my job is getting to work with a world class team of engineers. I especially enjoy the one-on-one interactions that I get to have with such an outstanding team.

Q: Where did you get your training/go to school?

High School: Eden Prairie High School, Eden Prairie, MN. (My high school physics class, where we calculated where a marble would land two stories down after rolling off of a ramp, and then having the marble land exactly where predicted – that’s when I knew engineering was for me.)

College (undergrad): BS Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics, University Minnesota, Minneapolis campus.
College (graduate school): MS Mechanical Engineering, University of Washington, Seattle Washington

I’m very glad that I took a composites engineering/analysis class and a mechanics of materials class at the University of Minnesota, and got exposure to finite element modeling while an intern at General Dynamics. Those things set up the rest of my career. I wish that I would have taken a statistics class. There are so many applications for statistics with all of the data that just about any engineering or STEM career will be exposed to.

What Engineers Do: Civil Engineer Chantill Kahler Royer

For Engineers Week 2022 we wanted to show #WhatEngineersDo by chatting with some real engineers with Martin County ties. Today we hear from Chantill Kahler Royer, a civil engineer who is Chief Financial Officer with Kahler Automation.

Q: What do you do at your job?

I have had a lot of cool jobs! Since they are so different, I thought I’d share a bit about each of them. Engineering is all about solving problems, and all of these jobs have that in common.
I started out as a college graduate working for a civil engineering firm in central Iowa that designed municipal waste landfills (this is where the trash from your house is disposed).
My next job was working on radioactive landfills at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington state. After decades of producing plutonium, in the 1980s the government determined the site needed to be cleaned up to protect people and the environment. I researched what materials from nuclear reactors were disposed in unlined landfills and help design the plans to move that material to a safer, double-lined landfill further away from people and water sources.
After that I worked as a Water Resources engineer for Bolton & Menk in Mankato, where I helped design systems for stormwater (the water that runs off when it rains or when snow melts), including raingardens, to help clean the water before it enters our lakes or rivers. I also wrote Environmental Assessment Worksheets and Environmental Impact Statements to research and determine ways to help reduce environmental impacts from projects all over Minnesota. I also delineated (determined the boundaries of) wetlands to help protect those important resources.
Now I am the Chief Financial Officer for Kahler Automation, where we make industrial automation systems for bulk material handling (like at a farmer’s cooperative). In that role, I get to help guide the company and administer our ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software that helps run our company.

Q: What’s the best part of your job?

The best part of my previous jobs was helping protect the environment. I have always loved water and enjoyed being in and on the water whenever possible. With each of my civil engineering jobs, I was able to contribute to protecting the environment in a different way. In my current job at Kahler Automation, the best part is getting to help my co-workers do their jobs in a smart and efficient way so we can better serve our customers. And I am proud of how the company is involved in our community.

Q: Where did you get your training/go to school?

I was born and raised in Fairmont and attended Iowa State University in Ames (Go Cyclones!), where I got a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with Environmental emphasis. Later I earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Minnesota State University Mankato.
One of the best parts of my time at Iowa State was my graduate research assistant position, where I worked on a team studying water quality in the Des Moines River. The Des Moines River Water Quality Network (DMRWQN) is a surface water quality monitoring project, conducted by ISU's Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering under contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. I worked with Donna Schulze Lutz, who was a great mentor to me.
For that project I took water samples along the river, drove a big mobile laboratory to sampling sites, and also got to captain a research boat to take water quality samples on reservoirs. Sometimes we also electroshocked fish for a project where we analyzed pesticides bioaccumulating in carp.

Q: Are there any classes you wish you would have taken or are glad that you took?

Growing up, I was very shy and didn’t enjoy talking in front of people. In 4-H we did demonstration speeches which began to help make public speaking easier, but once I got to college I knew I really needed to be able to communicate my ideas and research findings confidently to others. Even though I was always nervous at the start, after each presentation I’d feel a little more sure of myself. I’ll probably always be a little nervous about it, but I know I can do it and do it well! I’ve used this skill a lot in my work and personal life.

What Engineers Do: Software Engineer James Viesselman

For Engineers Week 2022 we wanted to show #WhatEngineersDo by chatting with some real engineers with Martin County ties. Today we hear from James Viesselman, who is a Backend Software Engineer with Altarum Institute.

Q: What do you do at your job?

I am a backend software engineer who creates public health applications for Altarum Institute. I program and design how our software processes medical data such as lab reports and disease data. I mainly write code in Java using many software development tools and technologies to develop the part of the application that integrates the user interface and the database together. This often requires me to collaborate with other software engineers of different areas of specialization and business analysts to build out the entire application.

Q: Where did you get your training/go to school?

At Fairmont High School, I learned the basics of programming in both the robotics extracurricular program and its associated class. It gave me my first experience of programming to solve real world problems.
My degree was in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota. Virtually all of my courses contributed to software engineering experience in some way.
My internship was through Packet Power LLC. where I had my first job related to software development. I gained first hand experience of how to develop business grade software which is quite different from the more academic related programming experience I had previously.

Q: Are there any classes you wish you would have taken or are glad that you took?

The classes that provided me with the best experience for my career were ones where you could see how programming can be used to design practical applications. For example, the class Program Design and Development, gave me a lot of insight into how larger scale software projects are structured. We created an application called "Paintshop" that was similar to Microsoft Paint and Photoshop using criteria created by an imaginary client. Over the course of the semester, we had to continuously build upon our application with new features in a way that felt realistic to what I do in my career currently.

Q: What do you do at your job?

I solve business problems by writing software and leading a team of software engineers. Specifically at Kahler Automation, we primarily work with businesses that blend and sell plant nutrients and chemicals. Our involvement ranges from integrating with other software systems (exchanging order and delivery information) all the way to actuating the equipment used to blend and dispense and measuring liquid and granular materials.

Q: What’s the best part of your job?

There are so many opportunities to learn new things (new technologies, patterns, etc.) and improve your technique. It's also very gratifying when something you create solves a problem for many people.

Q: Where did you get your training/go to school?

Fairmont High School, and Iowa State University (BS in Computer Engineering)

Q: Are there any classes you wish you would have taken or are glad that you took?

I'm glad that I took (and had the opportunity to take) computer science in high school. It's where I discovered my passion for writing code. I think it's unfortunate that the same opportunity isn't currently available in the high school that I attended, but at the same time, there are other opportunities that weren't available when I was in high school (e.g., robotics).

Youth robotics returns to Martin County!

Dozens of elementary students from across Martin County, Minn., teamed up for an energetic robotics competition at Truman High School the morning of Saturday, Dec. 4th.

This collaborative event required students to navigate their robots around the game field to push small beanbags into a lower goal, or launch them skyward into a higher goal. Teams were encouraged to work together during each 90-second match, finding ways to make the most of their robots varied specialties. Points were scored for each beanbag swept away from the game field’s edges and into the goal, with a bonus if their robot was able to lift itself off the field before time ran out.

This Martin County KnowHow! VEX IQ Robotics Competition saw 5th & 6th graders from the Truman, Fairmont, Martin County West, and Granada-Huntley-East Chain school districts — 37 students across 13 teams — working together to face a friendly collaborative challenge. These students spent several weeks building and learning how to operate their VEX IQ robots, and were excited to put their hard work to the test.

Light concessions (a fundraiser for Truman Pride) will be available for sale at the free event, scheduled to take place in the high school gymnasium.

Robots + plants + pollinators... Oh my!

Three-day camp features STEM fun for area students

FAIRMONT, MN — More than 40 area elementary students explored the world of plants, pollinators, and robotics at Martin County KnowHow!’s summer STEM camp, held Aug. 3-5 at the Southern Minnesota Educational Campus in Fairmont.

Students entering grades 2 through 6 this fall enjoyed a variety of projects over the three-day camp, including “Field Trip in a Box” activities from the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, as well as teaming up to assemble VEX robots — which the older students demonstrated in a tournament at camp’s end.

The camp began with the “Plants as Partners” activity, in which students learned how different plants can play a role in removing carbon from the atmosphere, reduce the heat island effect in urban areas, and serve as cover crops to reduce erosion in farm fields. Students also got to plant three different kinds of seeds.

The next morning students learned about pollinators such as bees, flies, bats, hummingbirds, and butterflies, and the types of flowers each prefers, planting seeds of some pollinator favorites. The “sweet” fun continued as students learned how honey is made and got to see real honeycomb and taste it, too.

In the afternoons, students were introduced to VEX Robotics kits, building small technological marvels. With the GO kits for younger students, they were able to create a bunny, supercar, adaptation claw, and inclined plane with car, plus several original projects.

The older students worked in groups to build a remote controlled robot to compete in a game of engineering challenges between the groups. Students first worked together to follow detailed technical instructions to construct a base robot, and then were given time to innovate on the base design to better complete the challenges. Students then brought their unique robot to a competition where their designs’ strengths and weaknesses could be compared.

Through these robotics projects and challenges, students learned basic engineering principles, on-the-fly problem solving, creativity, and teamwork. All of their collaboration, persistence in the face of challenges, and ability to make adjustments as they gained experience paid off with the excitement of putting their finished robots to the test in competition. Their pride in their work was also evident as they welcomed parents & guardians on the final day of STEM camp to see what they’d been up to… and even let some younger kids and siblings drive their robots for a little bit.

Over the course of the camp, students also painted camp t-shirts using their own arm- and hand-prints, and sponge painted to resemble a tree — a learning tree, of course!
